Keep your fish healthy with the right aquarium filtration

Aquarium filtration is extremely important and will determine the health of your fish tank.  Not only do you need proper aquarium lighting, air pumps, heaters and other accessories, good aquarium filtration is a must.  There are 3 main types of water filtration.  They include mechanical filtration where the water passes through a screen to remove debris.  Chemical filtration occurs when the water passes through a piece of carbon or zeolite and removes harmful things like ammonia.

Biological aquarium filtration occurs by bacteria that live on gravel, plants, aquarium decorations, bio balls, or BIO Wheels.  This type of bacteria is very good for you aquarium as it digests the waste that has dissolved in your tank’s water.  Biological filters are basically living space for these beneficial bacteria.

Like most aquarium accessories, you can choose from a number of filters to meet all your aquarium filtration needs.  Many hobbyists have been using a corner filter that sits inside your tank forcing water through a bed of filter floss.  The great thing about this filter is the price – it is extremely inexpensive.  Other filter choices include undergravel filters, sponge filters, power filters and canister filters.  Speak to a professional where you buy your fish to get advice on which one would work best for your tank.
