What you need to know before adding aquarium ornaments to your tanks

 When starting a fish tank, you have to put list together of all the equipment and aquarium supplies required.  This would include aquarium lighting, heaters, air pumps and aquarium ornaments.  You can choose from a variety of rocks, plastic plants, driftwood, ceramic decorations and backgrounds.  You options are endless but there are some important things to know before you put anything in your tank including aquarium ornaments.

When shopping for aquarium ornaments and decorations there is one very important rule of thumb. Unless there is a label on it saying it is safe to go into your aquarium, please do not put it in your tank.  If there is no label on the decoration, it could be toxic to your fish once placed in water.  To be safe, buy all your decorations and ornaments from reputable pet and fish stores or websites.

Another caution to be aware of when buying aquarium ornaments is around plastic plants.  There are making some great plants but be sure to buy those made of 100% plastic.  Some come with wire inside to help maintain shape over time.  Again, these can start to rust and will become toxic to your fish so make sure they have the proper label of safety on them.
