What to do about cloudy aquarium water

If you have cloudy aquarium water, you have a problem you need to deal with immediately.  The color of the cloud is the best indication of your issue.  If you have green cloudy aquarium water, you have what is known as an algae bloom.  The most common causes of an algae bloom is either excess nutrients including nitrates and/or phosphates or excess aquarium lighting.

To get rid of the green cloudy aquarium water, clean out your tank immediately.  Second, you will need to reduce the amount of food that you give your fish.  Remember, all the food should be eaten within 2 to 3 minutes.  If not, you are giving them too much.  Third, reduce the amount the light in your tank.  You may have to turn off your aquarium lighting more during the day. Finally, change your filter more often as well as your water.  This will help control both nitrate and phosphate levels in your aquarium.

If you are experiencing white cloudy aquarium water, this is an indication that you have a bacteria bloom.  Bacteria blooms can be caused by medical treatment that has destroyed the bacteria colonies in your tank, high levels of nutrients can cause a bacteria bloom, as can changing your gravel or cleaning all filters at the same time.  The best way to get rid of a bacteria bloom is to control the nutrient levels in your tank.  Once this is done, the bloom will likely go away.
