Why choose acrylic fish tanks over glass

When looking at which type of aquarium to buy, there are a number of advantages offered by acrylic fish tanks versus glass tanks.  Acrylic fish tanks are up to 50% lighter than glass aquariums which are quite a significant difference especially if you have a larger tank.  Even though they are lighter, they are said to be up to 17 times stronger than glass.

Because of this strength, you have a larger selection of designs available with acrylic fish tanks than you do with glass aquariums.  You can make them both longer and taller or a variety of other shapes not always available in glass designs.  Another advantage acrylic has is that it has a higher impact resistance level than glass.

When selecting your aquarium lighting, keep in mind that acrylic fish tanks allow almost 98% of light to pass through while glass allows approximately 70%.  This feature alone will give you truer colors of both your fish and corals.  Whether you are a hobbyist or professional, this is an important consideration when putting your aquarium together.
